Research- Audience reactions and Categories

Audience Engagement
How do you want your audience to react to your music video?
·         We want our audience to be able to relate to our music video by feeling connected to the outfits the band members wear and the content of the narrative.

What will they think of your artist?
·         They will think our band is of an Indie subculture due to the way they dress and their music.

What personal reaction do you want from them?
·         We want them to be able to feel like they can relate to the narrative of the music video and feel engaged to the performance.

Does Dick Hebdige or Theodore Adorno’s theory apply to the reaction you are looking for?
·         Yes and No, Adorno’s theory suggest that the masses are passive and uncritical; we want our audience to be passive to an extent, we want them to be passive enough to take in our music but as Adorno’s theory is not modern it’s difficult to believe audiences are completely passive. Hebdige’s theory also applies to the reaction we’re looking for. As some audiences will be critical, controversy could form usually creating more sales.
Audience Expectations
What expectations would your audience have of your music video based on genre?
·         They will expect our music video to have a sort of performance based of the band; the band will usually be playing their instruments during the performance e.g. guitar, drums. They will also expect the band to be dressed within the Indie subculture (e.g. shirts, chinos and vans).

Are you following generic conventions and does your videos follow any of Goodwin’s theory?
·         The main conventions to Indie music videos are to dress within the Indie subculture. We are going to follow this main convention by making our band members were outfits such as shirts, chinos and vans as this is common within the Indie subculture.
·         Our music video will follow most of Goodwin’s theory. Voyeurism won’t be used intentionally as there won’t be any half-naked women on the scene. Although the female in our music video will have make up and have her hair done; this may be voyeuristic as she’ll look pretty but it won’t be to the extent that she looks seductive.
Audience Foreknowledge
What knowledge will your audience have of your artist before watching your video?
·         Before watching our music video, our audience will know that are band is Indie. This is mainly because of the name of the band ‘Highly Indie’.
Audience Identification
How can your audience relate to your artist in the video? For example; Locations? Narrative? Costume?
·         Our audience will be able to relate to our music video in many ways. Firstly the location. In the narrative part of our video, the location will be outside a cinema. Our audience will be able to relate to this location because cinemas are available for everyone and there is always one nearby. Our audience will most likely to have visited a cinema so they will be able to relate to one of our locations.
·         Secondly the narrative. Our narrative is basically about a guy who finally gets to talk to the girl he’s liked for a while. Our audience, mainly males will be able to relate to this narrative because they have most likely liked a girl and had not gain the courage to talk to her until she talks to him.
·         Lastly the costume used. Our audience will be able to relate to our music video because of the outfits worn by the band members. These outfits will be similar to the Indie subculture.

Will they feel that the artist is accessible to them as Dyer’s paradoxes suggest?
·         Yes. As the first paradox states, our artist will be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer. They will be ordinary in the sense that they will be wearing similar clothing as the audience; they will feel connected. They will also be extraordinary in the sense that they are a talented group who perform on stages; the audience may aspire to this.
·         The second paradox is the star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer. Our artist will be present as the video will be available on social network sites such as YouTube; the audience can visit this site and view the music video anytime they want. Our artist will be absent as the audience won’t be able to see them in real life except they go to visit them at a concert.
Audience Placement
How are you going to specifically target your audience through your music video?
·         We are going to target our audience by making our band members wear clothing which is from the Indie subculture. This will target the Indie subculture because of the common clothing.
