The location in a music video is important when trying to relate to the audience. If the location is an area where the audience can relate to, then they will feel like they can relate to it. On the other hand if they can’t relate to the location, then they may aspire to the location. We used our questionnaire in order to find and use locations that the audience will feel like they can either aspire to our feel connected to. From our questionnaire, we found out that performance based is more popular than narrative or concept based videos. From this we decided to set our music video with performance base and some of narrative so they don’t get bored of too much performance. The location of the performance base will be on a stage or hall where our band would be the focus when we cover “Cigarettes in a theatre.”
For us to actually use a performance based music video, we needed a stage where the band can perform. As Daniel was in charge of location, he had to find a location that would conform and be conventional to a performance based music video. He suggested our schools drama studio because the lighting conditions are better as there’s no natural lighting; we can manipulate the lighting better. This will allow more focus on the band. These two location were ideal for our performance based music video as they are both performing areas and therefore have good lighting equipment and space which were key to allowing us get the most out of our music video and make it conventional to both our audience and the performance based music video theme but, As the lighting already set and present in the music studio is more spaced out, this would allow us to highlight all of the band members without having expenses of buying more lighting to do this job. Although the drama studio is small which would limit the amount of camera movement and range of camera shots in which we could use, we could still use the main and conventional camera shots for a performance based music video such as close ups. We used the school to locate the performance based because the characters are members of our school so travel times will be less, the characters would have less trouble getting to the location which would improve their reliability of turning up rather than being postponed due to factors such as traffic etc.
From our questionnaire, we found out that narrative based was the sound popular. As we want to add two so out video won’t be boring we’re going to add narrative in our video. We believed that that the use of a narrative in our music video would appeal to our audience as they may feel connected. By using performance base, it would allow our band to introduce themselves to the audience. From our questionnaire, we found out that our target audience preferred to watch music videos where they can relate to. From looking at the lyrics of our chosen song, we found out that the songs narrative in which it portrays is set around a theatre so we decided to use a theatre as our second location in order to tell the story of the lyrics. We decide to use a cinema as this is more suitable for us to film (cinemas are set in less crowded areas). This also suits our target audience of the indie subculture better as a cinema is widely stereotyped and aimed at “Cultured” audiences.
There were two local cinemas in which we could use as our location; “Cineworld” and “Odeon”. Cineworld in Enfield is nearby and popular so the target audience may recognise this location; due to distractions, we are planning to film during a time where there aren’t a lot of people. We also chose to use “Odeon cinema” as it has a wider space in front of it which allows us a larger filming space whereas Cineworld is located right by a busy road which will cause lots of distractions and less space to film.

The locations show a relatioship between the lysrics and visuals, does ths relate to any of the theories you have studied? How do the locations target your audience?
