Planning- Lighting

As the genre for our music video is of an Indie genre, we need to use elements that are conventional to the Indie genre. From my research I have found that the most common use of lighting in Indie music videos is low key lighting and the use of spotlights on the band. The low key lighting creates a dark scene and is usually used in performance based music videos as this darkens the background and makes the band members more noticeable. The audience would enjoy this as it helps their favourite artist/ band to be more eye-catching as they aspire to them. The spotlight combined with low key lighting highlights the band and leaves the rest of the room darker so they become the main attention and attraction of the music video whilst they perform.

For our music video, we will have two different kinds of lighting as we are filming in two locations. We will be using the drama studio to film the performance part of our music video. This room has built in spotlights and is painted black. For this location we will use the conventional low key lighting and spotlight style. These conventional lighting may attract our Indie subculture audience as it has been used before in many successful Indie music videos such as Two Door Cinema Club- I Can Talk. The built in spotlights will help us to manipulate the direction of where the lighting is pointing. So we can highlight our band members playing. Also as the drama room is painted black, this will help to darken the room to emphasize the power of the spotlights.

For our second location in front of Odeon Cinema, where the narrative part of our music video will be shot, we will use natural lighting as it is harder to manipulate lighting outside during the daytime. Also it will make the scene look more realistic as we want our audience to be able to relate to the scene

  1. Your research has informed your planning so that the lighting is conventional. You have also explained the purpose behind the lighting and the effect you want to create. Consider how you can support your filming on location to ensure that it is well lit, through the use of external lighting and reflective lighting boards.
